Life and death are bitter and sad realities that every individual encounters. In Islam, the transition of a soul from this world is marked with prayers and supplications to ensure a peaceful journey ahead.
When a person departs, it’s a necessary practice among Muslims to offer Dua Maghfirat, prayers for the forgiveness of the deceased.
Our Beloved Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said:
“When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious son, who prays for him (for the deceased).”[Sahih Muslim].
So, when a person dies, muslims recites:
إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un

Maghfirat Ki Dua For Dead Parents: Father And Mother
Losing a parent or both parents is an extremely tough time. It’s a time full of sorrow where you might find it hard to find peace. But, it’s crucial to grasp the reality that death is a part of life.
During such times, your prayers for your demised parents can be very comforting. There are specific prayers or Duas in Islam that you can recite for your parents to hope for their ease in the next life. Here are some of these prayers:
Dua for Judgment Day
رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ
Rabbana-ghfirlī wa liwālidayya wa lilmu’minīna yauma yaqūmul-hisāb Our Lord!
Forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day when the judgment will come to pass. (Surah Ibrahim, 14:41)
Dua for Mercy
رَّبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا
Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayanee sagheera
“My Lord! Be merciful to them as they raised me when I was young.” (Surah Al-Isra’ 17:24)
Dua for Forgiveness
Rabbana-ghfirlī wa liwālidayya wa liman dakhola baytī mu’minan wa-lilmu’minīna wal-mu’mināt
My Lord! Forgive me, my parents, and whoever enters my house in faith, and all believing men and women (Surah Nuh, 71:28)
These prayers are a way to ask God’s forgiveness and mercy for your parents and all believers. The first prayer is asking for forgiveness on the day of judgment, which is a crucial time according to Islamic beliefs.
The second prayer is asking for mercy for your parents as a thank you for raising you. The third prayer asks for forgiveness for your parents, yourself, and all believers.
Through these prayers, you’re showing respect, warmth, and care for your parents, even after they’ve passed away, and hoping for a peaceful journey ahead for them.

- I wish to extend my condolences on the death of your mother. I pray for her soul to rest in peace and for you to regain your strength.
- I wish I could say something to help ease your pain. May the Almighty give you patience and ease to pass through these trials.
How To Help A Dead Person In Family Or Friends?
Helping a dead person in some cultures and religions involves performing certain actions on their behalf. These actions may include prayers, charitable deeds, or fulfilling the late person’s unmet religious obligations.
Such practices aim to provide spiritual benefit to the late closed person, showing love and respect even after their departure.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“When a person dies, all his deeds come to an end except three:
- Sadaqah jaariyah (ongoing charity, e.g. endowment)
- Beneficial knowledge (which he has left behind and others benefit from it)
- A righteous child who will pray for him.”
(Reported by al-Tirmidhi, no 1376; he said this is a saheeh hasan hadeeth)
Praying for the Loved One
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“A man’s status will be raised in Paradise and he will ask, ‘How did I get here?’ He will be told, ‘By your son’s du’aa’s (prayers) for forgiveness for you.”
(Reported by Ibn Maajah, no 3660; see also Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1617)
The above Hadith explains that a person’s good position in Paradise can be improved by their child’s prayers for them.
When a child prays for forgiveness for their beloved dead parent, it’s believed that this act of affection and respect can benefit the parent in the afterlife. It emphasizes the powerful impact of a child’s sincere prayers for the late parent’s spiritual status.
Giving to Charity
‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that a man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):
“My mother has passed away, and if she could have spoken, she would have given something in charity. Will she receive a reward if I give something on her behalf?” He said, “Yes.”
(Reported by al-Bukhaari, Fath, 1388)
The lesson we learn from the above hadith is about giving charity on behalf of a dead person. If a person couldn’t give charity before passing away, a family member can do it for them. By doing this, the demised person can still receive the spiritual rewards of the charitable act.
Do Fasting, Umrah, or Hajj
Adullaah ibn Buraydah reported that his father (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “While I was sitting with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), a woman came to him and said: ‘I gave my mother a slave-woman in charity, and now my mother has died.’ He said: ‘You have got your reward, and your right of inheritance has brought your gift back to you.’ She said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, she still had one month to fast – can I fast it on her behalf?’ He said, ‘Fast it on her behalf.’ She said, ‘She never went to Hajj – can I perform Hajj on her behalf?’ He said, ‘Perform Hajj on her behalf.’” (Reported by Muslim, may Allaah have mercy on him, in his Saheeh, no. 1149)
According to the hadith above, a family member can fast or perform Hajj for a person who passed away if they were unable to do so while alive.
This will help the dead person fulfill their religious duties. It’s a great approach to show love and continue the late person’s spiritual journey even after they have passed away.
Doing Religious Activities for Them
Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported that a woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said:
“My mother made a vow to perform Hajj but she died before she could do it. Can I perform Hajj on her behalf?” He said, “Yes, perform Hajj on her behalf. Don’t you think that if your mother owed a debt you would pay it off?” She said, “Yes.” He said, “Then pay off what is owed to Allah, for Allah is more deserving of having vows fulfilled.” (al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, 7315)
If someone promised to do a religious task like Hajj but died before they could do it, a family member can do it for them. It’s like if a loved one owed money, you’d help by paying it back.
When you do so, you actually help the departed person keep their promise to God, showing love and respect for them even though they are gone.
Make Animal Sacrifices On The Name Of Dead Person
When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) offered a sacrifice, he said:
“In the name of Allaah, O Allaah, on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad” (reported by Muslim, no. 1967) – and the family of Muhammad included both the living and the dead.
As per the hadith, we can share a sacrifice in the name of a demised person. When the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) made a sacrifice, he did it for both his living and family members who demised.
This good act like a sacrifice can benefit both the living and the person who passed away, keeping the bond of love and respect strong even after someone has passed away.
Final Thoughts
In Islam, honoring the departed through prayers and charitable acts is a cherished practice. These actions, deeply rooted in faith, give condolences during grief and aim for spiritual peace for the dead person.
They promote communal support, providing a sense of connection between the living and the departed, in the journey of acceptance and healing.
